Teaching about Gratuity is Not Gratuitous

Research papers provide opportunities to introduce students to unfamiliar and uncomfortable topics they will encounter during a study abroad experience. By delving into the culture, history, and economics of controversial attitudes and practices, students can learn how to comport themselves in a way that will neither draw unwanted attention nor offend others.

As a cultural practice that exists in many Western cultures, but not everywhere outside the West, gratuity presents a problem for some. This is especially true for students traveling to the United States, where tipping has escalated to a degree to which even some Americans bristle. Hence, students stand to benefit from acculturation to the customs, background, and expectations they will encounter while studying in America. What’s more, the interplay of class, gender, race, and socioeconomic status that governs the practice of leaving gratuity affords fertile ground for distinct positions that can be supported.
